Senior SCADA Engineer – Solar, Wind, Battery Energy Storage (BESS) and High Voltage Substations - Renewable Energy - Leading Renewable Energy Developer - Long Term Freelance/Contract Opportunity

Job Overview:

We’re seeking an experienced SCADA & Communication Systems Engineer to support the delivery of cutting-edge renewable energy projects, spanning solar, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and HV transmission infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

• Drive the full lifecycle of SCADA and communication systems across renewable energy assets – from initial concept and system architecture through to deployment and commissioning.
• Work closely with engineering, IT, and control room teams to ensure seamless integration and alignment with project goals.
• Act as the main technical liaison for SCADA vendors, Transmission System Operators (TSOs), and regulatory bodies.
• Lead SCADA engineering efforts across multiple projects, ensuring they’re delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
• Implement and maintain robust cybersecurity protocols across SCADA systems and communication networks.
• Guarantee all system designs comply with national and international standards in renewable energy.
• Provide expert input in meetings, reviews, and technical discussions with clients, contractors, and suppliers.

Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Control Systems, Communications, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience working with SCADA architecture, cybersecurity, and grid compliance within renewable energy or power utility sectors.
• Strong technical understanding of RTUs, controllers, and communication hardware (switches, routers, firewalls).
• In-depth knowledge of SCADA protocols such as IEC 60870-5-103/104, IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3, OPC, and ODBC.
• Practical experience with database systems (SQL, OSIsoft PI), and secure network infrastructure including VPNs and firewalls.
• Exposure to substation technologies, operations within renewable energy parks, and familiarity with energy trading systems.
• Confident communicator, able to convey complex technical matters to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
